fabnob (short for Fabulous Nobodies) is an Australian retailer specializing in indie-brand tees from well known labels like Imaginary Foundation and SEIBEI.

fabnob (an abbreviation for Fabulous Nobodies) is an Australia clothing retailer specializing in tees. They seem to stock a lot of indie brands, such as Glamour Kills, Imaginary Foundation, and SEIBEI. If ordering these tees from the US are too expensive for you Australian readers, this might be a good place to check! (This is offset by the fact that the prices on fabnob are significantly higher than they are on the brands’ websites. They also have a shirt listed at a million dollars. What?) Nevertheless, the selection is pretty fantastic and they seem to have good taste in designs.

I probably wouldn’t recommend fabnob to non-Australian customers, since their international shipping is pretty high.

Shirts: $42-55 AUD on average

Shipping: Flat rate $5 within Australia. International shipping starts at $12 and goes up from there.

Atheist Monkey is a brand about–you guessed it–atheism, freethought, and skepticism. Their designs are on the simple side, but have punchy, clever slogans that are sure to appeal to the atheist crowd. Atheist Monkey uses the Spreadshirt platform to print their shirts, so it’s the usual deal — you can get each design on multiple shirt colors, which is always a plus. I do wonder why they skipped over offering the customization tool, though.

As a niche brand, obviously Atheist Monkey won’t interest you if you aren’t an atheist. If you are, I’d say they’re worth checking out — there aren’t many atheist brands and even though the designs are flashy, you might appreciate the slogans.

Shirts: $17.99

Shipping: Based on Spreadshirt’s shipping. Starts at $4.50.

Sin Star is a UK-based clothing brand featuring edgy styles and designs.

Sin Star is a UK-based clothing brand. Since its start in 2009, the company has expanded from t-shirts to a range filled with everything from sweaters, to studded leather jackets, to bikes! Sin Star’s style can be best summed in one word: “edgy”. The designs tend towards darker, subtly punk-rock imagery and wouldn’t look out of place in a down-and-dirty nightclub. All of the artwork is of excellent quality and represents the brand well. The prices are a little steep, but if you’re looking for a strong, cohesive brand with an edgy feel, look no further.

Shirts: £34.99

Shipping: Free if you live in the UK or Europe. They only ship to certain countries internationally (this doesn’t include the US), so make sure to check that yours is on the list.

Tshirt Contest is a weekly design competition. Each new design is available for preorder for $12 during the first week, and $18 thereafter.

Names rarely get more straightforward than T-Shirt Contest, a design competition which has the community vote on designs. New designs are offered for preorder on a weekly basis for $12. After their spotlight week is up, they get bumped down and the price goes up to $18. Only nine shirts are available in the shop at any time, so once a shirt’s nine weeks are up, it disappears forever. Tshirt Contest prints on Hanes blanks.

The designs selected for print here average out to about a 7 or 8, on a scale of 1 to 10. Most are artistically or conceptually good, but few blow my mind. They also print on Hanes and sell their shirts at a higher price than many other stores charge for American Apparel.

Shirts: $12 on preorder, $18 for eight weeks after that.

Shipping: Tshirt Contest ships via USPS. Charges are calculated at checkout.

Reason Clothing is a NYC-based streetwear brand for men and a branch-off of a store selling antique collectibles and records. Unsurprisingly, it is strongly inspired by classic/vintage styles of the 20th century and a healthy dose of NYC pride. It doesn’t take a lot to see that the brand is fully-fleshed out, with a full line of clothing and flawlessly professional presentation. Branded tees are difficult to pull off in a unique way, but I feel Reason manages to do so without deviating from the vintage look they aim for. Recommended for fans of streetwear and NYC locals.

Shirt Punch is a Canadian daily t-shirt site with each shirt going for $10. All the shirts feature pop culture designs.

One shirt every day for $10. Yep, it’s another one of those sites. Every day, Canada-based Shirt Punch offers a new pop culture tee available only for 24 hours — after that, it’s gone for good. Artists chosen for print earn $1 for each shirt sold, and retain all rights to their designs. Shirt Punch seems to be doing pretty well as far as design selection goes; most of the designs from the past are of good quality and don’t rely heavily on t-shirt cliches or memes. There are a lot of clever crossovers/parodies here. Every so often, you’ll see a piece that could have easily made it on Woot or Threadless.

If you love pop culture parodies, this is definitely the site for you! The designs here are well-chosen and $10 is a good deal for an American Apparel blank.

Shirts: $10

Shipping: Varies by country and # of shirts.

Tilly’s is an American skate/surfwear retailer. Like most stores of its type, it primarily carries t-shirts from big board sports brands like Billabong, Volcom, and Hurley. However, I’ve also spotted tees from independent brands like Glamour Kills and Imaginary Foundation. They have a large catalog so this is a good place to check if you like branded tees. I’ve ordered from Tilly’s a few times in the past and they’re generally reliable, though their default shipping price is ridiculously high. They regularly heavily discount older items and offer coupons/lower free shipping thresholds so you can find a good deal every now and then.

Shirts: $19.99-21.99

Shipping: $7 flat rate within the US, $10.95 international.

I’ve seen Italy-based Suck! Clothing around for a while, but it wasn’t until recently that I really stopped to look through their website. The catalog is impressively large, spanning t-shirts, hoodies, and accessories. Their style has moved towards a more design-focused aesthetic, and away from the skater/80′s cartoon stuff. I think this is a great move for them; the newer designs are impressive and are sure to appeal to a wider audience. I think everyone, from Threadless fans to streetwear buffs, could find something here. They even carry a women’s line with actual women’s sizes (as opposed to unisex sizes labeled as women’s), and plenty of designs to pick from.

Dress Royale is a brand inspired by progressive thinking and movements for change.

Dress Royale is a new US-based brand spun off of an independent media company that celebrates breaking the status quo and free, confident expression. Inspired by the likes of graffiti artist Banksy and the Occupy Wall Street movement, there is a certain grassroots quality to the brand. The designs are varied in style, but united in their smooth execution and theme of social commentary. The designers excel at the subtle art of one-color prints; none of the shirts seem flat or boring.

Really, the only real weakness I see in this store is the website, which could be pegged for a template design a mile away. It has no personality and tells me nothing about Dress Royale’s message. Better branding (starting with an actual logo, which I’m shocked DR lacks) would make a huge difference in grabbing the attention of curious window-shoppers. Also, including a separate section for women is rather misleading when the products are simply the same versions offered to men (and don’t have a particularly unisex cut that would be flattering to women).

US-based Electric Zombie has long been one of the more successful and popular indie t-shirt brands. The brand’s lines regularly rotated between the brightly-colored designs of the spring and summer and the darker, more mature illustrations of the fall and winter. Recently, the latter was spun off into its own line called Grave Takers. Like Electric Zombie, the theme is horror all the way through, except with less camp and more gloom. The designs are generally monochromatic and the colors less bright and eye-popping. The high quality of EZ’s branding, designs, and website is still present. Really, all that needs to be said is that this line is worth checking out if you enjoyed EZ’s fall/winter look.
