http://bit.ly/b03V30 I think I’ve finally figured out why some of Cotton Factory’s prints are misaligned and have this thick, plasticky, unnaturally smooth/foamy feel. Two of the shirts I ordered from them in the past year came out this way, and make me extremely wary of going back for more, despite the plethora of coupons and sales. (I should also mention that the shirt I received that WAS screenprinted, Icarus Wing, was removed from the catalog since my last review.) While better than the crappy heat transfer stuff, the fact is I can get true screenprinting with better, more unique designs and cheaper shipping from plenty of other companies.
I’m glad to see Cotton Factory upgrade their guys tees to AA since my last time dealing with them; the next step would be to ditch this mediocre printing style that does no favors for some of their better designs. Or, at the very least, be upfront about what kind of printing they use.
The CottonFactory Underground here with a BIG tip. Head on over to CottonFactory.com and use the coupon code 2010 for 15% off through the end of JAN. While we are at it, a point of clarification: We actually do print all of our girls tees on AA, but find that our menfolk need tees where XXL means you are one big mofo as opposed to a roundish emo kid. When was the last time you saw a linebacker in an AA tee? Peace.
Girls’ shirts at Cotton Factory are on AA, and accordingly they are a few bucks more expensive. My main qualm is the high cost of shipping. There’s no reason shipping a single shirt should cost $7.
The vast majority of the designs are not that original or visually appealing. I recommend checking out the CF Originals, though those are significantly pricier, because there is some good artistry there.
The printing on one of my shirts came out a little funky. It was smooth and almost foamy to the touch. The details were ragged and messy, and some of the colors looked terrible. I returned this shirt — was not happy with the look of it at all. CF reimbursed me, but managed to lose the return form in which I specified that I wanted an exchange, not a refund, on the other shirt I ordered. (Sizing issues) I can’t say I was incredibly satisfied with my experience, but I do plan on getting myself another “Icarus Wing” shirt (the one I wanted an exchange on) when the next sale comes around.
The Cotton Factory has a huge selection of shirts, some of which emulate designs found on other sites, but most of which are original. Shirts are printed on Gildan Ultra Cotton blanks which are slightly heavier than American Apparel but not as soft.
IMO, the best designs are in the “CF Originals” and “Freaky State Tees” areas (links in the left sidebar on their site). “CF Originals” are those designs that were created for The Cotton Factory and often have interesting placement like at the bottom hem of the shirt. They are a little pricey at $22. The “Freaky State Tees” contain images of each of the 50 states with a strange or funny city name selected. They are very reasonable at $13. I ordered “Disco, IL”, plus a few others. I also ordered the $4.50 “Faultee” which is basically a random design that was misprinted somehow. I received the “Spider Web” design that had been printed on the back instead of the front.
Their site isn’t the easiest to navigate. There’s no way to view all shirts at once. Shipping is also a little pricey for just one shirt. It pays to order multiple shirts to reduce shipping costs. $16 for 8 shirts in my order. I received email notification when I placed the order and when the order shipped. My shirts arrived 3 days after the order was placed. The shirts were crammed into a USPS Priority envelope, and arrived wrinkled but otherwise okay.
